There are so many aspects that
can be discussed.
I only have the time to choose one.
The Root of all Evil
.... is .....
Ignorance.
Why is there a greater
sanitation problem in the discount shops.
The program mentioned immigration and that people operating
discount shops often don't understand English well.....
SO WHAT,,,, I don't see that as an excuse!
Right, it has little to do with the language.
And it really isn't a matter of evil intent or greed.
It's ignorance.
If I remember correctly, I
believe someone on the 20/20 program
did say "I don't think some of these people understand the concept
of sanitation".
Oh I know, you say you know people who were raised different and
you know people with a poor education and that has nothing to do with
it.
Well, actually we know nothing about being from a
society
from the other side of the world where germ is an unknown concept, where
it is spirits that cause illness, where medicine is so little understood
that
many look upon medicines almost as 'magic'.
You think you know ignorant people.
You don't know ignorance at all until you deal with people from one of
the
poorest, least educated societies on earth that is not that many steps
above
Medieval Times. So
imagine some woman raised on that other side of the earth....
on the other side of the moon..... now a nail worker in a discount
shop....
let us call her ... Mz Viet.
Now one Tuesday, Mz Viet brings her mother a cheeseburger that she bought
on sale at
MacDonalds on Monday. It's been in the car for 24
hours. Now you know that this
cheeseburger has had little tiny germy bugs multiplying on it for 24
hours. And you
know that bringing someone a day old, stale cheeseburger is not a special
treat.
But Mz Viet doesn't know about those bugs and she grew up poor. Not
in America poor.
She grew up on the other side of the world poor..... and that stale
cheeseburger is
considered a treat. Now
Mz Viet and her sister and her mother often take care of all the kids at
one house.
Four kids. And you come into the house and you see one bowl of
food and one spoon and
that one bowl and one spoon being pushed into four little kid's
mouths. And you say,
"Don't you people know about germs? Don't you know one sick
kid will make all four
kids sick sharing the spoon like that?" And you get an
educated person who also came
from the other side of the world on the phone to explain to them what it
is that you are
upset about.
And you come into the house a few days later and you see four kids being
fed. And there
are four bowls of food and just one spoon going from each bowl of food
into four different
kid's mouths. And you see that the three women did not understand and you get help
explaining about the spoon to them. Ok.
And you come back the next day to see four kids being fed,,,, and good
golly, yeah, they
are using four spoons. And oh yeah. One bowl. All four
spoons being used in one bowl. I
have a million more of this kind of story.
But the point is not to tell more stories, the point is why do some
people do what they do. SO
on 20/20, when you saw buffer blocks that have been used on 50 or so
customers,
and nail files covered in nail dust and you say why are they doing that?
You want me to throw it in the trash can?
I bought it. I paid money for it. I used it once. It
still has a lot of use.
You want me to throw money in the trash can?
It has a little bit of dust on it. What do you mean germs? I
have eyes.
There's dust on it. No disease. There is no pus or blood or
such on it.
It's still good. I can't throw it out.
You grew up in a rich country. You grew up sleeping on a mattress
while I grew up
sleeping on straw. You grew up walking on carpet while I grew up
walking on dirt.
You grew up driving in a car while I grew up walking with my legs.
I think I understand you.
You grew up with so much that you can throw money in the trash can.
..... I can't. So,
the point. No we are not making excuses. We are not
defending anyone.
But we, ok, make that me. I am always concerned when the subject
of the flaws of the
discount shops come up that
many people become upset and emotional and angry.
Well, I'm against
poorwork and lack of sanitation.
And you are against poorwork and lack of sanitation.
I, we, are all opposed to such things as 'poorwork' and lack of
sanitation. The
point is.... they don't 'get it'.
Often the cause is a degree of ignorance that is beyond what your own
life experience
has prepared you to accept. ___________ ______________________________________________________________________________
Now, many people know that if my viewpoints have a tendency to upset
you
then don't read me. OK? So,
what's on your mind? Look
if let's say the lady at the bank knows me and asks me,
Tito, tell me, in our area, which places should I avoid going to have my
nails done? There
are not only 6 Vietnamese techs in our immediate area that I would say
avoid....
there are also 4 American techs in our immediate area that I would say
avoid. _____________________________________________________________________________ IIS
ANYONE GOING HEAD TO HEAD ? Some
of you may be aware that Renko and I owned and operated discount nail
shops
in the past. It was I who insisted that we get out of it and Renko
became a booth renter.
Why?: the opening of too many shops, the competition, the
unreasonable low level
of pricing. We could not compete UNLESS we ALSO cut corners.
Cut corners on
sanitation, hired unlicensed workers, paid workers cash under the
table. I found that
to be unacceptable.
So...
are there any American owned and operated nail only shops out
there? I mean
operating in an area that is also filled with Vietnamese discount
shops? I would love to hear
about how you compete and of your experiences. ____________________________________________________________________________ ALSO
I once thought the
situation would improve in one way. That too many discount shops
and such low prices would mean that I would begin to see some of them
fail. And, yes
I have seen some, a few, of the discount shops give up..... but not
many.
Instead, it appears some discounters are adding alternative forms of
income....
things like adding tanning booths ..... which is fine with me.
But of course, many others are adding other forms of unacceptable
practices.....
like adding illegal waxing.
It's disappointing. It's frustrating. ___________________________________________________________________________ WHAT
WHAT WHAT WHAT
I read what you write,,,
now and stuff in the past. And you say not, but seems to me
that you are defending and excusing the discounters !!!!!
Well, I hope not. I'm saying there are a lot of groups involved.
Discount workers, traditional nail techs, customers, clients, state
boards.
I guess I feel the responsibility for the sad state of affairs is not
only caused by the
discounters, but also their customers and the state boards.
