She Did a Birthday Party

So I didn't know about it,
as often she goes days
without hardly speaking to
me.  I guess I deserve that.
Actually, sometimes I prefer that.  But she mentioned that last Friday when she didn't arrive home til midnite, that she had been doing nails, manicures that is, at a birthday party.  Ten young girls in the twelve year old area.  Ten manicures at $10 each.  Not bad.

This is the first issue of the
Newsletter.
We are not going to take ourselves too seriously,
and we will sometimes be political, and we will occasionally be politically incorrect.  There is no INTENT to offend, but if offended,,,,, come-on.... chill.

Do the Males Read Us

We had been wondering if many of the males out there ever read any of the  pages.  One, it has been noticed that many nail techs mention that they wished there spouses took an interest in their nail biz.  And two, I have noticed that very few visitors have gone to our fabulous MODELS WEB SITE.

And then again, I think that
some of you have a spouse
who you WISH would keep
their nose of your nail biz?

How do ya like the color scheme this month... make your eyes spin ?? or what ?

SOUTH CAROLINA DOES SALON INSPECTIONS

South Carolina has a pretty with it board.  Visit them at their web site,
www.llr.state.sc.us.  Here some of their statistics from 1998 - 1999.
2,297 new licenses
30,053 total persons licensed
5,918 inspections performed
62 complaint cases
62 investigations
1,159 applicants passed the exams
1,075 applicants failed the exams

Also the SC board is changing its license procedures.  Going to a 2 year license and of
course as has been the case, every year one must attend a day long continuing education
course which is good for 6 units.  You must obtain 12 units during your 2 year license time
in order to be eligible to renew your license.  Ollie could not get into a class in time and
thus her original yearly license expired before she could apply for the new 2 year license
so.... the renewal fee for her is $ 130.00.  I thought that to be somewhat high.

DID YA SEE DR. JEANNIE DOWNIE ON "THE VIEW"

She presented an overview of dangerous beauty treatments and displayed a boatload
of ugly photographs.  Esp good were the photos of cut cuticles and the photos of
feet from hell (from unsanitary pedicure appliances).  Shiver.

NAILS TO YOU - - DISCOUNTERS CONTINUE TO OPEN MORE SHOPS

When we first moved to our little town of Indian Trail, just outside of Charlotte, there were
two hair salons  (maybe in small towns we can call them hair shops) that had a nail tech.
Now we have one, two, three, four discount nail shops.  And now a fifth discount shop just
opened.  I know cause they have been phoning Ollie to come work there during the peak
times when they are crowded and can't handle everyone.  Ain't it grand how ya can just
open a discount shop and the customers will come?  And their being Viet and Ollie being
Viet, Ollie can just go there when her own CLIENTS are not filling up Ollie's time at her
own biz.  Ollie is still does not have a full book to keep her 100% busy in her own salon.

So I went to visit these newcomers the other day and spent two hours chatting with them.
Nice shop in a brand new small strip shopping center.  Six nail tables, a pedicure throne,
and two tanning booths.  Typical prices, manicure 12, fill 15, pedicure 20, Full 25, ect.

Well anyway, spending that amount of time with them, I would rate the husbands nail skills
as poor.... and I would rate the wife's nail skills as fair to good.
Kmart understands America,,,,, heard what is coming back?
Attention shoppers, the Blue Light Special is back.

We also have a Viet hair stylist who has opened a hair/nail/tanning spa (why is everyone
using the spa word - is there no integrity left) in a brand new strip shopping center on
the main highway.  There are two Viet hair stylist there.  Her biz is definitely starting out
slowwwww.  I guess Kmart shoppers don't know that the Viets were also born to do hair.
Ha ha ....ya know I'm just saying that people are funny.

AND ... just a little ways down the highway from that place, an Amer lady has opened up a
hair stylist / nails salon in a much older, run down looking strip shopping center.
I went by to see her and see if see wanted to chat the other day, but she was busy with
a client.  I'll try dropping by next week.

Went by yesterday and went inside.  The salon is very nicely done on the inside.
The lady there is someone I have run into before.  Been in the biz for 20 years.
Many years ago, owned a salon location that Ollie later bought.  She does hair and
nails and booth rents to other hair stylists, but not to other nail techs.

WHAT IS YOUR DREAM SALON

I was thinking save that subject for next month.

Is that photo at the top of the page a photo of Ollie?  Noooooo.

SHE GETS A NEW CAR

I drive a 96 Plymouth minivan and she has a 98 Kia 4x4 Sportage.  Well she has always disliked
the Kia cause after all, it isn't a BMW, right.  And it is a underpowered, noisy, rough riding little
pig, but I was ok with it cause it is air bagged even under the dash and solid framed and should
protect ya very well in a crash.  It also looked good.  Of course the ladies she works with quickly convinced Ollie that any man that had his wife drive a Kia should be at best scorned, bitched at, made to sleep alone and eventually divorced.   Well I finally became aware that the Kia   reliability sucks, and was getting worse as time went by.... and at a mere 40,000 miles the entire transmission and the catalytic converter has to be replaced.  Thankfully under the 60,000 drive train warranty.  It had to go. Trading it in at the dealers was the worse, cause they know it's junk and didn't want to give ya much for it.  But we finally traded it in for a 2001 Toyota Corolla.
It bugs her some to buy a Corolla when her girlfriends in the discount trade buy new Pathfinders
and Toyota Four Runners and new minivans with TVs on the ceiling .... but hey, I tell her I never
promised her that we would be rich.
Just that I would love her.  Love for sale. La la la Lala.  Love for sale.

BACK PAIN, CHEST PAIN, DIFFICULTLY BREATHING

She has complained for years of pain and difficult breathing.  Every year there has been
check up.  TB testing, chest x-rays, visits to breathing specialists, even a checkup at my
cardio list for heart problems.  Nothing.  Every year, checkups disclose nothing.  Perhaps
you have a similar situation.  Well, she went to a doctor last month who took a different
tack.  Felt that her seated position may contribute to inflammation where the rib bones meet
the breast bone.  Gave her a prescription for anti-inflammation.  She started getting relief
within 24 hours.  Has been very very much better since on this prescription.

I noticed that some people posting have said that they are depressed.  So this doctor is
sharp, he noticed things about Ollie that she didn't even bring up.  Oh, I know about it.
She has compulsive behavior, like scrubbing the bathtub 5 mornings a week at 6 am,,,
lots of stuff like that.  So this doctor gives her a trial package of PAXIL.  Ollie doesn't
know what it is,,, just medicine.
So after 3 days of the pill, the bickering woman I know and sometimes love, is gone.
There is some girlish seductress who looks like my wife... who is calling out  - -
 Honeeeey..
...why don't you shut down that computer ..... and,, Come To Bed?
Didn't last, she hates pills.  She stopped taking them and my wife is back.

Point is.  If your doctor can't seem to help you.... keep looking around..
keep checking out other doctors.  Average doctor doesn't know half
of what we assume they know.

THOSE LITTLE THINGS THAT SAY YOU CARE

We like to give little, inexpensive gifts to our best clients.   What's a best client?  Huh, you
know who there are.  Anyway, from time to time, drop in the 'dollar' store on the way home
from a hard day at work.  Where every item cost one dollar.  Here is what we found recently.
Pumice stone, one dollar, comes in nice plastic drawstring pouch.  Three in one name buffing/file, ya know the kind for quick touch up, buff and shine, one dollar.  I carry one around.
Oh yes, I do my own manicures, I wouldn't dream of Ollie doing me ....
besides it keeps her ticked off that I don't want her to do it.

Also found for one dollar ... packages of instant decal nail art.
What does that cost at the supply store, huh?

GOOD NEWS / BAD NEWS / PRICES GOING UP

The good news is that people have responded to the introductory special of
$100 base price for a custom designed web site.  Some sites are already
completed and ready for delivery.  Three sites should be live by next Thursday.

Bad news is that I have already been contacted by some web biz'es and they
have seen my work and saw the intro price and said "we typically sell that high
a quality of design for a base of $400 to $500.  How long do you plan to offer
this intro price?"  I guess they don't care for 'web discount prices' any more than
we care for 'nail discount prices', ha.

Effective immediately, our base price for web design is raised to $200.
Once my schedule for the next 2 or 3 weeks is full, the base price will be
raised to $300.... and so on.

I urge those of you that are sitting by the sidelines,
thinking that maybe some day you will go onto the web... to take action now.
